Silver plate manufacturers in the United States were at one time considered as part of the jewelry trade. I imagine it was because of their dealing with precious metals. Standards of Living the book my Marina Moskowitz mentions how the marketing of silver plate had to navigate trade between jewelers and the developing department stores.
In this article from December 19, 1873 the electro-plate goods of the Meriden Britannia Company are highlighted among description of what we would the jewelers trade today. There is a brief description, containing all the requisite superlatives, or cake baskets, and porcelain lined ice buckets.
